Shamanism has evolved over millennia as a practice of human interaction with the world of spirits and natural forces. But today there exists a contemporary movement, made up of practices and ideas that connect shamanic notions of the interrelation between humans, spirits, and the natural world with modern ecological thought — eco-shamanism. The ritual mask takes on a new meaning — that of a heuristic tool that allows one to imagine a different way of perceiving nature, beyond the usual human optics.
